About Laurina
Laurina, also known as Bourbon Pointu, is one of the rarest and most delicate coffee varieties in the world. Originally discovered on Réunion Island in the 18th century, it is renowned for its naturally low caffeine content (0.3–0.7%) and refined, tea-like character.
Unlike traditional decaffeinated coffees, Laurina retains all its natural complexity while offering a gentler experience, making it perfect for those who appreciate the nuances of high-end coffee but wish to reduce their caffeine intake. Its distinctive elongated, pointed beans and vibrant acidity set it apart as a truly unique varietal.
About the Producer
Café Granja La Esperanza is one of Colombia’s most revered coffee farms, known for pioneering rare and exotic varieties. The Herrera family, now in their third generation of coffee production, has dedicated decades to refining their farming and processing techniques.
Originally founded in 1945, the family started with traditional Bourbon and Caturra varieties before expanding to highly sought-after cultivars like Gesha, Sudan Rume, and Laurina. Their La Esperanza farm is renowned for its organic production, meticulous processing, and dedication to sustainability.
This Laurina lot undergoes rigorous selection, with cherries picked at perfect ripeness when their sugar content is at its peak (Brix levels of 17–18). After harvesting, the coffee is dried for 48 hours in silos before being transferred to raised solar beds for 15 days, ensuring optimal sweetness and clarity.
Processing
- Fermentation: Whole cherries undergo a 48-hour open-air fermentation in special barrels. Temperature is closely monitored every 10 hours to maintain a range of 25–28°C, allowing for maximum flavour development.
-
Drying:
- 2 days in a temperature-controlled silo (18–32°C)
- 15 days on raised solar beds
The result is a coffee that is fruit-forward, floral, and exceptionally sweet, offering a refined and complex drinking experience.
