About Laurina
Laurina, also known as Bourbon Pointu, is a rare and highly sought-after coffee variety known for its naturally low caffeine content—typically around 0.3–0.75%, compared to 1.2–1.6% in standard Arabica coffees. Originating from Réunion Island, Laurina is prized for its delicate, tea-like body, floral aromatics, and refined sweetness. It is a notoriously difficult variety to cultivate, as it is highly susceptible to disease and requires careful attention from farmers. The effort, however, results in a cup that is uniquely elegant and complex.
About the Producer
Owned and operated by Juan Diego de la Cerda and his family, Finca El Socorro has established itself as one of Guatemala’s most celebrated farms. Known for producing some of the country’s finest coffees, El Socorro has won multiple Cup of Excellence awards, including first place in 2011, 2020, and 2023.
Juan Diego is deeply involved in every stage of production, from guiding pickers on optimal cherry selection to refining processing techniques at the wet mill. At an altitude of over 5,500 feet, the drying process demands extreme precision, with constant adjustments to protect the coffee’s integrity.
Beyond quality, sustainability is a core principle at Finca El Socorro. The farm is Rainforest Alliance Certified, using solar power for operations and relying on a natural water source for its wet mill. Beehives are also integrated into the ecosystem, aiding in pollination and supporting biodiversity.
Processing
This washed Laurina is carefully fermented, washed, and dried at high altitudes, where cooler temperatures slow the drying process and enhance flavour clarity. The result is a coffee with a crisp, clean profile and a refined balance of fruit and floral notes.
