Gesha decaf is back!

After our first Nariño Gesha decaf last year, we knew we wanted to get hold of another one. This latest lot was sourced by Coffee Libre from smallholder producers in El Tablón de Gómez, Nariño, and it’s a very different expression of the variety.

It’s floral, clean and delicate, with notes of apricot and green grape, a gentle citrus character and the distinctive quality we love about Gesha.

The coffee is grown at 1,800–2,100 metres above sea level, washed at origin and then decaffeinated using the EA process.

The story behind the coffee

This Gesha comes from smallholder producers around El Tablón de Gómez in Nariño, southern Colombia.

Nariño is known for some of Colombia’s highest-altitude coffee production, and this lot is grown between 1,800 and 2,100 metres above sea level. Cooler temperatures at these elevations slow cherry maturation, helping coffees develop sweetness, acidity and aromatic complexity.

Gesha is particularly prized for its floral aromatics and delicate fruit character, but it remains unusual to find it as a decaf.

Coffee Libre sourced both the coffee and its decaffeinated release, continuing their work with smallholder producers in Nariño. We previously featured their Buesaco and Samaniego Gesha decaf, and this El Tablón lot gives us another chance to explore what the variety can taste like without the caffeine.

The process

The coffee is first processed as a washed coffee before undergoing EA decaffeination.

EA process is a form of ethyl acetate decaffeination that uses water alongside naturally derived EA to selectively remove caffeine from the green coffee. The process is designed to remove caffeine while retaining as much of the coffee’s original structure and flavour as possible.

That matters particularly with a coffee like this, where the appeal is less about heavy fermentation or intense sweetness and more about the delicate floral and fruit characteristics of the Gesha variety.

Roasted fresh, in small batches

We roast every coffee to order in small batches on weekends before dispatching it fresh the following week.

If you enjoyed our first Nariño Gesha decaf, you'll enjoy this one. It's clean and crisp with floral notes.
